Saint Martin's Mission Cemetery, Waldo, Russell Co., KS, USA

Latitude: 39.103629608414366, Longitude: -98.81588459014893

Following the death of George Doorhamer Sr., his son-in-law, Charles Good, set aside an acre of his farm as a family cemetery. George Doorhamer Sr. was the first person buried in this cemetery. Later other family members and neighbors would follow and the cemetery then became owned by the Waldo RC Mission and known as the Saint Martinís Mission Cemetery aka The Waldo Catholic Cemetery. The cemetery was long ago abandoned and totally neglected. In the 1960ís a photo of the local brown sandstone of George Doorhamer was taken by a relative. The stone was laying on the ground and broken into three large pieces. Mayor Albert Clow of the Village of Waldo, Russell County, Kansas was contacted by me several times and took an interest in researching the cemetery. He stated it is now considered abandoned property. In 2005 there were only 8 visible grave markers. In 1925 there were 20 to 30 visible grave markers standing. The rest had fallen over and were covered with prairie dust. The cemetery is located on Laury Lane at the intersection of County Route 187 on what was originally the Good farm.

The following is an excerpt from an early article on Waldo St. Martinís Mission Cemetery:

In 1926, the Waldo Catholic Mission is no longer listed in the Catholic Directories. There is a cemetery plot of about 1 acre in the SE corner of Section 12, Township 11, Range 14 & of the 6th PM set aside in 1894 on the land that was then owned by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Good. The cemetery still exists about 1 mile west and 1 mile south of Waldo. There are 20 to 30 graves there with family names of Good, Ziegler, Duffy, Mans, Solber, Doorhammer and Goodman.
