Sprague, John Stanley (1916-1954)
There are two grave markers for John Stanley Sprague. One is a standard funeral home metal marker with the name Pulling Service on it, but there is no such funeral home in Ellenville, Ulster Co., NY and in fact I can find no record of this funeral service any place. I thought it would lead me to where he died, but no such luck. I searched the local archives for an obituary on him with no luck so my guess is that he died in another area and the remaining family failed to put an obit in the Middletown newspaper. We know he was living in Albany in 1946 with his wife. Perhaps one will turn up some day, but nothing now. No luck with any social security records either. Cemetery records reflect he was buried on May 21, 1954. He is in Section 10, Lot 8 at Fantinekill Cemetery which is the Raymond family plot of his wife, Sarah Denman Raymond. I will send a separate photo of her marker as she is not listed yet. Although the Raymond family are Ellenville people, I have had little luck on finding information about them so far. Will have to dig further. I recall her father being Charles Denman Raymond who is not buried in the plot, but his wife and Sarah's mother (Frances M. Wentworth) is buried in this plot. Denman was a prominent family in the Neversink Grahamsville NY area so they must be connected to them somehow. On John's military stone, there was some cement or something I could not clean up on his rank, but I believe it was LCDR, which I would guess stands for Lt. Commander. We know he was a Lt. but I am not a Navy guy and have guessed the rest. I would love to see somebody from this family pop up and fill in some blanks since I have come to admire this family and the role they played in the Village of Ellenville. There is a Sprague Court in the Village, but haven't found any relatives yet. For what I assumed was a fairly wealthy and prominent family, I would have thought that their markers would have been larger.

Fantinekill Cemetery, Ellenville, Ulster Co., NY, USA
Notes: The Fantinekill Cemetery was incorporated in 1871. It is a large sprawling cemetery that is well maintained and in active use. The single gated entrance is located on the west side of State Route 209 immediately north of the Village of Ellenville, Town of Wawarsing, Ulster County, New York. The address of the Fentinekill Cemetery Association is P.O. Box 415 Ellenville, New York 12428. Because of the size of this cemetery, it is best to contact the cemetery association for a map of the location of any graves since walking the entire cemetery would take several days to accomplish.
