- "Sprague Families in America", by Dr. Warren VincentSprague, page 87. Argalus Sprague was a farmer and stock raiser inVermontville, MI. He removed to East Leroy, near BattleCreek, MI in 1836 and to Vermontville in 1851. An honoredmember and officer in the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Argalus Sprague was born in Hannibal, Oswego County, NewYork, June 29th 1809. He died March 19th, 1903 aged 93,9months and 8 days, being the last of eight children. At theage of seventeen years he was converted, joining theMethodist Church of which he has since been a faithfulmember. He had been an official member and class leader fora period of seventy years.
In the year 1831, he was joined in marriage to Miss ElsieGitus [misprint Titus] Of Oswego County New York. to thisunion six children were born: Jonathan A., Silas S., MyronG., Jonas J., Lydia A., and Elsie, three of these survivetheir father. His wife dying in 1847, he was married in1849 to Miss Mary P. Brundrage of Battle Creek, who diedduring the succeeding year. On June 18th, 1851 he wasjoined in marriage to Mrs. Caroline M. Scovell, and to theunity were born two sons, Ernest E. and Frederic P., and adaughter, Amanda M. His wife Caroline M. died June 22,1900, but of the three children all survive him.
In 1836, Mr. Sprague moved to Leroy, Calhoun County,Michigan, taking up a claim in the territory soon to becomea state. His father and five brothers took up adjoiningfarms in the most fertile part of East Leroy. Here ArgalusSprague remained for eight years, when he was offered aposition as guard in the Jackson State Prison. In thisposition he remained for six years, serving first as guard,then as gate keeper, and finally as foreman. In 1850, hesettled in Vermontville, remaining there during the rest ofhis earthly life.
In politics, Argalus Sprague was an active worker in theranks of the Whig party, until it consolidation with theRepublican party in 1850, when he became a firm Republican.Argalus Sprague was a pioneer in the great northwest, oneof the countless multitude that transformed Michigan from aswampy wilderness into its present form. His long and quietlife speaks for itself. His life was one of service, and heheard his Lord saying, "Well done good and faithfulservant. thou hast been faithful over a few things, I willmake you ruler over many things. enter thou into the joy ofthy Lord."
Those in attendance at the funeral from out of town were,Rev J. Sprague, Mrs Lydia Green, Miss Della Sprague,Kalamazoo, Rev F.P. Sprague, Thompsonville, Mrs. Mae Morey,Grand Rapids, Mrs. Libbie Sprague, Mr and Mrs. Cowles,Battle Creek and Rev. Chas. Jacokes wife and daughter ofMiddleville. [7]
