In fact, John Hunter hired Abel in 1815 and the War of 1812ended in January/February of 1815, so there is no conflict.

- "Supplement to Sprague Families in America", by Dr. WarrenVincent Sprague, 1940, page 7.
Abel Sprague was a farmer and blacksmith. He served fromAugust 13, 1814 to November 24, 1814 in NY Militia underCapt. Jeremiah Gates. He is said to have settled on theoriginal Sprague homestead at Lew Beach where Edwin R.Sprague later lived, and where the "Sprague Home" forsummer boarders in 1927 was located. After his father waskilled by the Indians, it is said Abel Jr. and his mothermade their way through the wilderness to a farm near whereShin Creek joins Beaverhill stream, and there erected a logcabin and cleared a farm. It is said that on a trip back toNewburgh for supplies he met an Indian who was trying tobarter a pair of silver knee buckles for rum at a hotelnear Wurtsboro. He recognized the buckles as having beenworn by his father at the time he was slain, so he killedthe Indian and recovered the buckles which have been passeddown through descendants bearing the name of Abel.
