Charlotte Elaine (Weber-Rhodes) Armstrong
Charlotte Elaine (Weber-Rhodes) Armstrong, age 90, ofViroqua, died July 9, 2009, with her family by her side.
She was born on Dec. 17, 1918, in Rising Sun to Archie andFlorence (Heavrin) Weber. Charlotte was raised on farms inthe Vernon County area. After graduating high school inViroqua in 1938 (the 1923 building now named the LandmarkCenter and owned by her daughter Nancy), she attendedVernon County Normal School. She later studied interiordecorating and dog grooming. In 1946, she married ClarenceE. Rhodes of Illinois. In 1951, the couple moved to Texas.Charlotte later married Milo C. Armstrong. While in Texas,Charlotte worked for a catering business and retired in1985. In 1987, the couple moved to Viroqua where Charlottehelped her daughter, Nancy at her bed and breakfast for 17years. Milo died in 1996. Charlotte retired for the secondtime at age 85. She enjoyed outdoor recreation, dancing, traveling, gardening indoors and outdoors, but most of all, spending time with her family, especially her grandsonDallas, her sister Leona and daughter Nancy. She had a verysoft heart for pets and over the years had numerous dogsand cats. Her cats Missy, Oreo and Dallas' dog, Buddy, havebeen her constant companions for years.
In recent years she traveled to the historic spots of theEast Coast, including Gettysburg, Washington D.C., theVietnam Memorial, Norfolk, Va., to see the USS Wisconsinand Monticello. A few years ago, she traveled by motor hometo Colorado for her great-niece's wedding. She took acruise to the Bahamas, trips to Duluth, Minn., and couldoften be found on French Island/ La Crosse at our "resort"on the Black River (Tom Fider's home). Not many years agoyou might have seen her on the back of her daughter Nancy'smotorcycle. She was always a great "sport" and willing tocome along on any adventure, as long as it kept her nearher family. Years ago she traveled to Europe with hersister, Leona, and mother Florence to visit her brother,Marlin, who was in the Army in Germany.
Dancing was always a favorite pastime, as it was for hermother Florence, sister Leona and brother Troy. Sheespecially enjoyed waltzing, the foxtrot, two step, polkaand the shottish. For many years, at the Weber familyreunion, the four siblings would often dance the shottishor polka to-gether — al-ways teachingtheir children along the way. She always loved music andcontinued to listen to the old-time music show every day.She especially loved the polkas and country music.
Charlotte loved her devoted sister Leona's visits fromRockford and went out to the family farm on Fortner Ridgenear West Prairie to visit them while they were here andwhen their brother Marlin was visiting from Texas. The farmhas always been a favorite place to visit.
Charlotte was the most thoughtful and selfless person youcould meet, even anticipating others' needs. Even in thehospital, up until a few hours before she passed away andwhile they had her hooked up to every possible IV machineand were continuously poking and prodding her, she was moreworried about everyone else than herself. "Were we cold, were we tired, how was Dallas doing, etc."
Charlotte is survived by her loving, devoted daughter,Nancy Rhodes of Viroqua and special friend, Thomas Fider ofFrench Island/La Crosse; adoring grandson, DallasRhodes-Seevers of Viroqua; brother: Marlin (Emily) Weber ofSan Antonio, Texas; sister, Leona Hill of Rockford, Ill.;sister-in-law, Erma Weber; stepsons, Mike (Peggy) Armstrongand Mickey (Anna) Palmer, several nieces, nephews, otherrelatives and friends.
