Albert Arnold Sprague attended the Harvard School inChicago and went to St. Paul's School at Concord, NH in1893. He entered Harvard College and graduated with theclass of 1898 with the degree of A.B. He was given thehonorary degree of LL.D. from Northwestern University in1938. He entered the wholesale grocery business as amanufacturer in Chicago, with the firm name of Sprague,Warner & Co., which became the Sprague Warner-KennyCorporation, of which he became chairman of the board.
His interests were widely varied and he held many high andresponsible positions in industry, education andphilanthropies. He had served as a member of the boards oftrustees of Harvard College and of St. Paul's School;trustee of Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Museum of Scienceand Industry, Rush Medical College, Childrens MemorialHospital, John Crerar Library, Sprague Memorial Institute,Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Rapid Transit Co.,Chicago and Aurora & Elgin Railway Company, and was adirector of Chicago, Northwestern Railway, ContinentalIllinois, National Bank and Trust Co., InternationalHarvester Co., Clearing Industrial District, Baltimore andOhio Railway Co., Wilson & Company, Marshall Field & Co.,B. F. Goodrich Rubber Company and Sprague Warren & Company,and was receiver for the Chicago Rapid Transit Co.
During World War I, Mr. Sprague served as commanding majorof infantry, assigned to the 341st Regiment Infantry, wentto France and was made Lieutenant Colonel 9 November 1918,becoming later Colonel O.R.C.
He served as commissioner of public works of the City ofChicago 1923-1927 and 1931-1933. He was a Democraticcandidate for the United States Senate in 1924 and was amember of the Episcopal Church. He belonged to numerousclubs including Chicago City Club, Mid-Day, Commercial,Saddle and Cycle, Old Elm, all of Chicago; Harvard andRacquet of New York City and Harvard Club of Boston.

The death record for Albert Arnold Sprague shows he wasborn in 1876. His marriage record (maybe based on inputfrom him and his age given as 27), shows he was born in1874.
He served in WW I. I sent a message to the NARA to seewhat form I should use to obtain his military records. Ihave NATF Form 80 (rev. 10-93) right here in from on me.It is used to obtain records for army officers who servedbefore June 30, 1917. As he was commissioned about then, Idon't know if NATF Form 80 is applicable in that case.

Albert Arnold Sprague was graduated from Harvard College atthe right time to take charge of the construction of thegreat building which the wholesale grocery house ofSprague, Warner & Co., moved into in 1909 at Erie andRobert Streets, an eight-story building with ten acres offloor area, the most complete of its kind in existence. Hehas spent his business life in the organization of Sprague,Warner & Co., and in 1915 became president of the company,serving until Jan. 1917, when he resigned to enter servicein the United States Army. Upon his return to civilianlife, in Apr. 1919, he became chairman of the board ofdirectors of Sprague, Warner & Co., the position he nowholds (1921). Mr. Sprague has contributed his full shareof the maintenance of the high traditions and businessideals that have become an inseparable part of the policyof the house during its long existence, and in hisdirection of its affairs has heightened its prosperity andbroadened its sphere of influence. He has acquired manybusiness interests in varied lines, and is a director ofthe Merchant's Loan and Trust Co., the Chicago, GreatWestern Railroad Co., and vice-president of the City HallSquare Building. He devotes a large share of his time andattention to Chicago's institutions of cultural andphilanthropical value, and is a trustee of the Field Museumof Natural History, the John Crerar Library, and Children'sMemorial Hospital, the Rush Medical College, the ArtInstitute of Chicago, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, andthe Orto S. A. Sprague Memorial Institute. His influenceand leadership are dependable factors in all movements ofprogress in his city, and Chicago has profited from hisdevotion to her welfare. Mr. Sprague is a communicant ofthe Episcopal Church, and his clubs are the University,City, Chicago, Commercial, Saddle and Cycle, Onwentsia, andMidday, of which last named he is a charter member.
In Jan. 1917, Mr. Sprague entered the Reserve OfficersTraining Camp at Fort Sheridan, and was there commissioneda major of infantry in the United States Army. He wasassigned duty with the Eighth-sixth Division, and wentoverseas with that division in command of the SecondBattalion, 341th Regiment of Infantry. While in Francewith the American Expeditionary Force he was promoted tothe rank of Lieutenant-colonel, Nov. 9, 1918. In Apr.,1919, he returned to the United States, and was dischargedfrom the service in Apr., 1919.
He is a Republican in political sympathy. The multiplicityand importance of Mr. [p. 40] Sprague's businessconnections leave him little leisure for the pursuits ofpleasure, but in time that he takes from his work, he findshis greatest recreation on golf and hunting.
Mr. Sprague married Frances Fidelia, daughter of Henry andLaura (Field) Dibblee. Her father was a prominent businessman of the city of an early day, her mother a daughter ofJohn Field, and a descendant of William Field, a Puritansettler of Massachusetts. The family home is at No. 1130Lake Shore Drive., and their summer residence is at LakeBluff, Illinois.
