LAKE, Gladys Clare - 86, passed away peacefully inNorthwood Centre, Halifax, after a long battle withAlzheimers, on Tuesday, January 25, 2011. Born January 24,1925, in Asby Bay, Cape Breton,
Gladys was the third youngest of the 11 children of thelate Donald and Catherine Cameron.
Growing up in a large extended family, she developed a lovefor fiddle music and kitchen parties.
She married Arthur Lake in Bay St. Lawrence in August 1948.
They started their family in Dingwall, Cape Breton,eventually moving to Milford and then to the Halifax areain the mid 1950s where their youngest three children wereborn. Gladys was a homemaker, known for her tea biscuitbaking anf quilt-making skills and her wise and praticaladvice. She and Arthur raised their family of five inDartmouth, but often travelled to Cape Breton with familyand friends for visits.Gladys enjoyed Cape Breton dances, card playing (Auction45s) and spending time with her closest friends.
She was a member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church inDartmouth for many years.She is survived by daughters, Virginia and Clare, both ofHalifax; sons, Paul (Janina), Cole Harbour; and Vernon(Debra), Windsor; daughter-in-law, Lyne Lake, Cole Harbour;grandchildren, Jennifer, Michael, Kerry, David, John, Sarahand Peter Lake; sisters, Jessie Sprague, Aspy Bay; andPauline Mueller, British Columbia; brother, Archie Cameron,Fredericton, N.B.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur (1993); son,Barry (2006); sisters, Sybil Whiteway, Mary Skinner,Harriet McIntyre, Florence Cameron, Margaret Cameron, andbrother, Ernest.
Friends may call in the Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 QueenSt., on Sunday, January 30, 2-4, 7-9 p.m.
Funeral mass will be celebrated in St. Peter's Church, 10Maple St., Dartmouth, on Monday, January 31 at 10 a.m.,Father Jim Richards officating. Reception to follow in thechurch hall.
Burial will be in Mount Hermon Cemetery, Dartmouth at alater date.
Gladys lived in Northwood Centre for the last three yearsof her life, and it was truly her home because of thecheerful, compassionate staff who enjoyed her and had agenuine concern for her well being.Thanks to the entire community of the 1 Centre, Northwood(staff, residents, their family members) for your sympathy,kindness and prayers offered.
