From Jane Sanderman Mason, correspondent, note of 19September 2020
All family trees that I came across report that Mary diedsometime before 1900. Based on daughter Susan's 1881 birth,it would appear she died between 1881 and 1900.
An interesting mystery arises from information on James'1927 death record (see below).
James has reported he was widowed in the 1900 thru 1920census. His 1927 death record reports he is "married"(choices were married, widowed, divorced), and his wife'sname is Mary Jane Hines. His daughter Susan is theinformant for the death certificate.
That leaves at least 3 possibilities:
1. Daughter Susan misunderstood the question remarried/widowed and was reporting that he had been marriedand that the wife's name had been Mary Jane
2. Mary Jane is alive in an institution somewhere
3. Mary Jane left her family sometime before 1900 and herlocation is unknown.
Mary Jane's mother, Ann, died in 1911. Her obituary reportsbeing survived by five children. These would be John, Nettie, Charles, Joseph and Emma. AsMary Jane is not mentioned I am assuming she predeceasedher mother.
The Star Press (Muncie Indiana) Tuesday 30May1911 p6St. Marys. May 29. Mrs. Anna Sprague, 81, died this morningat her home north of town. Five adult children survive.Funeral Wednesday at Elmgrove Chapel, in __ of the Rev. E.C. Ste__.
Although it is a strange error, I feel comfortable thatMary Jane did die sometime before 1900. [3]
