I would like to draw your attention to a question you askedabout Helen Amelia "Nellie" Tinney and Charlotte "Lottie"Wright. I know you like a good story, as do I, and this isabout as good a story, although lacking in narrativedetail, as we are likely to obtain from documents of theperiod.
Back in March, my last message to you, concerning I304273Helen Amelia Tinney, I304275 Eliza Amelia Carpenter,I312899 Charlotte Wright was as follows:
I at last have an answer to your question about therelationship between the two girls in the picture who arewearing dresses cut from the same bolt of cloth . Theattached 1860 census shows that Helen Amelia "Nellie"Tinney and her mother, Eliza Amelia Carpenter (widow ofConnel Tinney), along with Charlotte "Lottie" Wrightresided in the household of James Brooks in Huron, Ohio.James Brooks' occupation is given as "merchant". My motherhad no knowledge of James Brooks. At this point he doesnot appear to be a relative but he certainly deserves to beconsidered family because he took in three unfortumatewomen, and two of them were my great-grandmother and hermom!
It is interesting that the 1880 census shows Helen Tinney, now the widow of George Sprague who died on the trail tothe California Gold Rush, to be a "dry goods merchant".Presumably she learned the trade in the household of JamesBrooks when she was thirteen. The 1880 census finds JamesBrooks living in Huron as follows:
