Erie County Reporter of 11-25-1880 p. 8, col. 3: "Died. McDonald-At Lyons, Wayne county, N. Y., Mr.Alexander J. McDonald in the 69th year of his age.
Mr. McDonald was born in Cheshire, New Haven county,Connecticut, on the 13th of September, 1812, and was thesecond son of the Rev. Daniel Mcdonald, DD., late Professorof Languages in Geneva College, N.Y. Accompanied by hiswife, he was on his way to the scenes of his early youth, and to make one more visit to the aged sister of hismother, who still lives in Cheshire. His stop inLyons was for a visit with near relatives.
Mr. McDonald settled in Huron in 1845, and married Lydia, the second daughter of the late J. S. Sprague, Esq., one ofthe pioneers of Huron, and here was his home until themessage came for him to depart and be at rest from hislabors. His habits of industry and his strictintegrity were rewarded with a fair competence for hisdeclining years and his family saw no reason why he shouldnot live long to enjoy it. Open hearted and generous, his house was the abode of that genial hospitality whichmakes the master and mistress most esteemed by those whoknew them best. Neither was his hand withheld from thedeserving poor or unfortunate, but none, except therecipients and the Master, knew the extent of his charitytoward his fellow men. Quiet, upright, and reliable, for many years he has been amongst us, leading the lifemost congenial to his retiring habits. But in an hourwhich none can foresee the call was heard and withourt astruggle or a groan apoplexy closed his life in the arms ofdevoted wife. One son and daughter are left to mournhis departure and cheer and protect their widowed mother inher remaining years." [3]
