H. W. McNitt, Ex-City Doctor, Dies in Florida at Age 79.
Dr. Harold W. McNitt, 79, a Binghamton ophthalmologist formore than 40 years, died yesterday at a Pompano Beach,Fla., hospital.
Dr. McNitt was retired, had been living in Florida since1964 with his niece and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. John W.Fern, formerly of Lexington Ky.
He was a native of Norwich and received his M. D. degreefrom the Syracuse University College of Medicine in 1912after studying at the Albany Business School and takingpremedical courses at Syracuse.
He did postgraduate work at Bellevue Hospital in New YorkCity and interned at Patterson General Hospital, Paterson,N. J.
He practiced in Norwich for four years before coming toBinghamton in 1923. He lived at 108 Oak Street.
Dr. McNitt served in the U. S. Army in World War I as afirst Lieutenant in the Medical Corps.
He was a member of the Broome County Medical Society, andthe New York State Medical Association.
He was also a past president of the Broome County DinnerClub, a member of American Legion Post 80, the Elks and theLions Club. He attended the Conklin Avenue Baptist Church.
In 1964, he was honored by the Lions Club, on the occasionof its 40th anniversary, as the only living charter member.
In 1962 he was honored in New York City as a 50-year memberof the New York State Medical Society.
He was married in 1919 to the former Catherine Sprague ofNorwich, who died in 1936. Dr. McNitt was remarried in1938, to the former Lorena Bean, who at the time, was anurse at Binghamton General Hospital. She died in 1957. Dr.McNitt had no children.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Dr. McNitt's body was moved to the Kraeer Funeral Home inPompano Beach. Funeral arrangements were incomplete.
Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park. [3]
