Robert I. Johnson
Robert I. Johnson, 82, of Westby, died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015, at the Vernon Manor in Viroqua.
He was born on Sept. 27, 1932, in Westby to Jalmer and Cora (Brettingen) Johnson. He attended Clockmaker Grade School and graduated from Westby High School in 1950. He joined the Army in 1954 and was discharged in 1956. Robert was united in marriage on June 15, 1957, to Bertha McSchooler of Omro, Wis. They lived with his parents on the family farm until 1963, when they purchased it and his parents retired and moved to town. Robert was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Cashton, and many of his early years were following the Norwegian services. He served on the church council and cemetery board for many years. He was also on the Christiana Town Board, Westby Co-op Creamery Board, Vernon Telephone Co-op Board, American Legion, Sons of Norway, Westby Lions and Vernon County Board. Robert always enjoyed being helpful and volunteering. He had a great sense of humor and loved speaking Norwegian with people. He was a very loving, soft-hearted person who took time for family and friends.
In addition to his wife, Bertha, Robert is survived by his sons, Roger Johnson and Grant Johnson both of Westby; two daughters, Jean (Fred) Wedwick of Westby and Sue (Mark) Slickers of Lafayette, Ind.; nine grandchildren, Julia Johnson of Missoula, Mont., Jessica Johnson of Rochester, Minn., Joanna Johnson of Madison, Wis., Colin Wedwick (Aymie) of Winchester, Ky., Shannon Wedwick of Westby, Amy (Norm) Goede of Bangor, Wis., Daniel Johnson of La Crosse, Kyle (Brandi) Lane and Andrew Lane, both of Lafayette, Ind.; five great-grandchildren, Megan and Brandon Goede, Kaden Kruger, Marshal Wedwick and Gunner Lane; three nephews, David (Wanda) Johnson of Westby, Rodney (Wendy) Johnson of Coon Valley and Gerald (Patty) Johnson of Westby; sister-in-law, Janet Johnson of Westby; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Walter Johnson; and a grandson, Joshua Johnson.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2015, at Immanuel "Moen" Lutheran Church, rural Cashton. Pastor Amanda Schultz officiated, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends called at the church until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers or plants, memorials may be given to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Bethel Butikk or the charity of the donor's choice.
The family would like to thank Vernon Manor, Dr. William Calkins and Vernon Memorial Hospital for the care Robert received.
