Duxbury, Plymouth Co., MA, USA [2] |
From Virginia Sprague Webster, correspondent. In response to W. V. Sprague's indicated dob of 1690and another reported date in 1692: I have a problem with his d.o.b. When I was inCanaan, the Canaan/Falls Village Town Records had the entryof his death: "died on April 6, 1760 at the age of 77." Asyou can see, for this to be possible he would have to havebeen born ca 1683. If this is accepted as fact, he wouldthen be the first and not the fourth child of Lt. JohnSprague and Lydia Unknown. According to the Town Record ofOld Headstones, he is buried in the Lower Cemetery offroute 126, Canaan, CT and the headstone was last seen in1934. When I was there in May 1994 the stone was no longerthere.

- From Homer Scott, correspondent. I've been working on Capt John Sprague of Duxbury,Lebanon, Sharon, Salisbury and Canaan and noticed somethingwhich set me off on a search. I am passing along theresults and hope you will find them useful. The report by Virginia Sprague Webster that the Canaandeath records show that Capt John Sprague "died on April 6,1760.." must contain an error, either in her reading of therecord or in the records themselves. Page 183 of volume2 ofthe Canaan Land Records has a deed of 12 September 1761signed by John Sprague and John Sprague, Junior, whopersonally appeared. Capt John was alive in 1761. The microfilm of the Sharon, Conn. Probate Records inthe Connecticut State Library has the will of Capt JohnSprague, made 21 June 1754, and the.inventory, taken 28April 1763. The witnesses to the will appeared on 26 July1763 to attest to having seen John Sprague sign his will. So, Capt John must have died in April, 1763, not 1760. There is an agreement of 10 April 1765 in which MarySprague (___) received part of the orchard and 6 acres ofCapt John's land, but I found nothing dated 10 April1763.or earlier. There is no mention of Capt John in theCanaan VRs, the Canaan Church Records, or the CanaanCemetery Inscriptions in the State Library. I am attaching part of the microfilm of the inventoryof Capt John Sprague from the Ct State Library. You willsee that the inventory was dated 28 April 1763. This placeshis death in April, 1763, so assuming that the Canaan Townbook record is correct in saying that he was 77, his birthdate would have been 1686. If he was in his 77th year, itwould have been in 1687. Either date would remove him frombeing the first child of Lt. John. I am attaching part of the Probate record of Capt JohnSprague from the Ct State Library microfilm. You will seethat the dates, 26 July 1763 and 27 July 1763 give us thedates on which the witnesses appeared to attest to havingseen John Sprague sign his will. This should tell us whenhis will was accepted by the court.
