Obituary
Sprague, Charles Gilbert CD (LCol Ret.)-82, of Dartmouth,formerly of Kentville passed away on January 8, 2014 at theDartmouth General Hospital. Born in Halifax he was a son ofthe late Gilbert and Ivy Sprague.Charlie was a graduate of Mt. Allison University (BA) classof 1952. After graduation he was employed in Halifax withImperial Oil for two years and then Simpson Sears for afurther two years. In 1957 he joined the RCAF and servedfor 30 years. His postings took him to locations in Ontarioand the Maritimes. He also served with the UN in Egypt anddid a tour at the USAF Joint Deployment Agency in Tampa,FL. At the time of his retirement in 1986 he was theDirector of Transportation and Resources and Plans atNational Defence Headquarters in Ottawa. After retirementfrom the RCAF he was employed at IMP Aerospace as a memberof a project management team until 1991.
While living in Kentville, Charlie belonged to theKentville Gyro Club, Ken Wo Golf Club, the KentvilleCurling Club and the Wolfville Lawn Bowling Club. He alsovolunteered with Meals on Wheels and the Canadian CancerScoiety. In Dartmouth he also did some volunteer worknotably with the Tall Ships 2007 visit to Halifax, CanadaGames 2011, Runway Run 2012 and last but not least as amember of the Robert L. Stanfield International AirportTartan Team. Over the years Charlie enjoyed golfing,curling and lawn bowling and belonged to a number of clubsmany of which he served on the Board of Directors.
He is survived by his son, Stephen (Charlotte) of Midland,ON; daughter, Linda (Carl) Beck of Delta, BC;grandchildren, Christin and Wesley Sprague of Toronto andJonathan and Matthew Beck of Vancouver. He is also survivedby his second wife, Joan (Cashman); her children, Bill andPatty of Dartmouth and Mary of Havelock, ON; as well asJoan's four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife of 53 years, Ruth(Hayward). Many thanks to the doctors, nurses and all thoseothers for the care they provided during this difficulttime as well to family and friends who were so supportive.As per Charlie's wishes there will be no visitation orservice. A private family interment will take place inMount Hermon Cemetery. Memorial donations in Charlie'smemory may be made to a charity of choice.
