The birthdate for Giles is a problem.
In 1822, he is paying taxes and owns land -this is theearliest record available- This would imply he is at least18
1830 — age 30-39 Implying a birth between 1791-1800
1840 — age 30-39 Implying born between 1801-1810
1850 — age 51 abt 1799
1860 — age 681870 — age 60 supposedly this age is on his tombstone, butit is clearly incorrect, the stone is unreadable.
I think he was probably born abt 1799-1800.

Notes |
- "Giles Badger and His Descendants", by John CogswellBadger, page 48.
Giles Badger walked to California.
From Nancy Fischer, correskpondent, note of 1 October 2020
I seriously doubt that he went to California. He ispresent in the tax records for several years before andafter 1849, the years of the Gold Rush, up until about1857. He had given his land to his son Philo some yearsbefore that, so he may not have owned anything to tax bythen. He is in the 1850 and 1860 census in Girard, I thinkonce again, the author mixed people up. [1, 2]

I have reexamined the tax records repeatedly. I now thinkone of the missing sons is Thomas as he is always living onthe same lot as Giles Sr, Giles Jr. and Jeremiah. He has100 acres to the others 47 1/2. He is missing after about1831. I imagine he either died or moved away. I think died. The second one could be named Arvin, he is listed as asingle man in 1822, so at least 18. He appears a couplemore times before 1830, then disappears. He did not seem tohold any property. I do not think they just moved away asneither appears in the census. I would love to hear yourtake on my conclusions.
