"Beaverkill Valley - A Journey Through Time", by Powell andBarnhart, page 336. Hiram Sprague lived all his life in the upperBeaverkill Valley and farmed his land on Mary Smith Hillwhich he bought from Abel Sprague and wife, Rachel, 7December 1847 containing one hundred and a half acres, thesame farm presently owned by Deyoe. The 1860 FederalCensus for Colchester, Delaware County shows Hiram 38,Phebe A. 31 and three children.

SUDDEN DEATH
THE MYSTERIOUS WORK OF HEART DISEASE Hiram Sprague an Old and Respected Resident ofBeaverkill dies at this Village Suddenly. Hiram Sprague an old resident of Beaverkill diedsuddenly at the residence of his son, Charles Sprague, nearthis village on Saturday last. He had been at his son's house but a day or two havingjust returned from visit to Cook's Falls and Chas. Hardies'at Roscoe, and was eating an early dinner preparatory toleaving for the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edward Deyoewhere he has for some time made it his home, and talkingpleasantly with those around him, when without warning hishead dropped forward on his breast. Loving hands tenderlylaid him on the bed, but life was extinct before anythingcould be done for him. The hands of the clock marked justthe noon hour when his life passed away. Dr.. R. A. DeKay was called and pronounced the causeof death heart disease. The deceased had been trouble for some time with thedisease and had once before fallen unconscious from thetrouble, but rallied after a time. The funeral services took place at the houseWednesday, conducted by the Rev. Chas. Alberti. Intermentin the Beaverkill cemetery (hand noted L. B. Cem.)
He was 73 years of age.

To the Surrogate's Court of the County of Delaware
The Petition of Horatio Benjaminof the Town of Rockland in the County of Sullivan,respectfully showeth: That your Petitioner is the Executornamed in the Last will and Testament of Hiram Sprague lateof the Town of Colchester in the County of Delawaredeceased: That the said deceased was, at or immediatelyprevious to his death, an inhabitant of the County ofDelaware and departed this his life in Sullivan county onthe 15th day of April 1893, and that said Willand Testament relates to both real and personal estate, andbears date the 14th day of May 1892.
Your petitioner further showsthat the husband, wife, heirs and next of kin of thetestator, all persons in being who will take an interest inany portion of said real or personal property, and theexecutor or executors, trustee, or trustees named ordescribed in said will, with their perspective residences,are:

The Will of Hiram Sprague
Be it Remembered, That ata Surrogate's Court, held at the Surrogate's Office inDelhi in and for the County of Delaware, on the15th day of May 1893, the last Will andTestament of Hiram Sprague late of the Town of Colchesterin the County of Delaware, deceased, was duly proved, andbefore Albert H. Sewell, Esq., Surrogate of said County,and was by said Surrogate adjudged valid, and establishedas a Will of real and personal Estate, and the sametogether with proofs and examination taken on the probatethereof, are, pursuant to an order of the Surrogate hererecorded, to wit:
Last Will and Testament
I, Hiram Sprague, aged 70 yearsof the town of Colchester Delaware Co. N. York, do make,ordain, publish and declare this my last Will andTestament, in manner and form following, that is to say:
First – I direct the payment ofmy just debts, if any, and my funeral expenses.
Second – I give, devise andbequeath to my son, Abel I. Sprague, during his life time,the use and income of the farm now occupied by him, whichis described in a Deed executed by Abel L. Sprague andEliza H. Sprague, Dated the 16th day of March1864 and recorded in the Delaware Co. Clerk's office on the7th day of July 1864 in Book No. 58 of Deeds atpage 251 etc. and, after the death of my son Abel I., hiswidow, if any survives him, to have the use and income ofthe above mentioned farm during her life time, if sheremains his widow. If she remarries, then the bequeath ofthe use and income of the farm above mentioned is to becomenull and void.
Third – after the death of myson Abel I. Sprague, and the remarriage or death of hiswidow, I give, devise and bequeath to my Grand childrenDorsey Sprague and Charles M. Sprague, sons of Abel I.Sprague, the farm above mentioned, share and share alike.
Fourth – I give, devise andbequeath to my son Charles H. Sprague, and to my daughterLydia E. Deyo, the sum of one dollar to each one, theyhaving heretofore been given their share of my property.
Likewise, I make, constitute andappoint Horatio Benjamin of the Town of Rockland, SullivanCo. New York to be executor of this my last Will andTestament, hereby revoking all former wills by me made.
In Witness Whereof, I havehereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal, theFourteenth day of May in the year of our Lord, one thousandeight hundred ninety two.

Abram Broadhead of the Town ofMiddletown in said County of Delaware, and Jacob S. Garrettof the Town of Andes in said County, being duly andseverally sworn in open Court, do severally depose and say,that they were acquainted with Hiram Sprague late of theTown of Colchester in said County of Delaware, deceased inhis life time, and are the subscribing witnesses to hislast Will and Testament. That the said Hiram Sprague didin the presence of these deponents, subscribe his name atthe end of the instrument which is now shown to them andwhich purports to be the last Will and Testament of saidHiram Sprague and bears date the 14 day of May 1892, andthat the said Hiram Sprague did at the time of subscribinghis names at the end of the said Will as attestingwitnesses thereto. That at the time thereof the said HiramSprague was of sound mind and memory, of full age to makesaid Will, and not under any restraint.
