DEATH OF MRS. COLEMAN BALLARD
Passed Away On Saturday
Infirmities of Old Age and Gangrene the Cause.
Was in Her 86th Year
Mrs. Mary Jane Ballard, wife of Deacon Coleman Ballard,passed away at her home near Four Corners, Towners, onSaturday, Sept. 24, 1921, aged 85 years after an illness ofseveral months caused by the infirmities of old age andgangrene from which she had suffered for several weeks.
The deceased was Miss. Mary Jane Sprague before hermarriage, a daughter of Ferris and Rachel Russell Spragueand was born in the town of Kent in 1835. For a number ofyears Mr. and Mrs. Ballard lived in East Fishkill, DutchessCo., but for many years their home had been at Towners on alarge farm which Mr. Ballard purchased. Mrs. Ballard wasone of a family of three children, having two brothers,Russell and Levi, the later one having passed away about ayear ago.
Funeral services were held at the Patterson Baptist churchat Towners on Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock and wherein charge of Rev. Cornelius H. Otto, pastor of the church,of which Mrs. Ballard was a member.
The services were very largely attended and there were manybeautiful floral tributes. Interment was made in the familyplot in the cemetery at Towners.
The death of Mrs. Ballard removes another of the oldestresidents of this section of the county. Mrs. Ballard wasknown for a geat distance by her kindness of spirit andreadiness to help and assist at any time in anyministration where help was needed. A great sorrow fromwhich she never entirely recovered was the loss of her onlydaughter, Mrs. Sarah Rogers, many years ago. Several monthsago the infirmities of old age settled upon her followed bythe dreaded gangrene, but her sufferings were bornepatiently to the end. For her aged husband, Deacon Ballard,the greatest sympathy is manifest in his bereavement. [3]
