Marine Decorated. Sergeant Raymond J. Daggett, who rescued wounded companions on Iwo Jima, is shown as he was presented with the Bronze Star at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

A Briarcliff Manor Marine Sergeant, Raymond J. Daggett, who defied an enemy artillery and mortar barrage to rescue wounded companions on Iwo Jima was recently awarded the Bronze Star Medal....

Daggett, an infantry squad leader, was a member of an assault company which supported a tank attack near the center of the island. Nearing Iwo's volcanic ledges the Marine attackers were caught in a mortar barrage and the infantrymen were forced to seek cover.

The intense barrage fell on the tanks disabling many of them. Wounded crewmen were caught in their battered vehicles. A few crawled out of their tanks but were unable to move to a place of safety. Daggett went to aid them. He continually moved into the danger area until he was struck in the left arm by a shell fragment....

First Manor Man to Enlist Leaves Service, Lost Hand

Raymond J. Daggett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Bell, North State Road, Briarcliff Manor, was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps as Platoon Sergeant last Thursday terminating five and a half years of service.

Winner of the Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement and recipient of the Purple Heart, he saw action in the Marshalls, at Saipan and Tinian and on Iwo Jima where he was wounded sustaining the loss of his left hand.

The first Manor man to enter service, Daggett enlisted in the Marine Corps Sept. 25, 1940 and trained at Parris Island before going to the Canal Zone where he was stationed for two and a half years. Returning to the States in 1943 he was stationed in San Francisco where he joined the Fourth Marine Division and embarked for overseas combat. He was one of the first to go ashore and hoist the American flag on one of the captured islands in the Pacific and, along with other members of the Fourth, won the Presidential Unit Citation for outstanding achievement on Saipan.

Last September he was presented the Bronze Star Medal in formal decoration ceremonies at the Philadelphia Navy Yard by Colonel William C. Hall. Daggett won the award while serving as squad leader in action at Iwo Jima.

In addition to these awards he received the Good Conduct Award, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon, American Defense Ribbon, Victory Medal and American Theater Ribbon.

A graduate of the Briarcliff High School, Class of 1939, he was well known as an athlete during his school days and played in varsity competition on several of the school teams. His future plans are undecided.

His brother, Thomas V. Daggett, one of the first local men to leave in the draft, was discharged several months ago and is a veteran of the African campaigns and the Normandy invasion, serving with the Ninth Army.

I wrote about the following Hartman's website in one of my previous emails. This time I looked over the website carefully and so far every fact I could verify was correct. It would appear he is drawing from family knowledge as some of the material would not have been available in Ohio databases. So, even if I cannot document full dates, I am considering them in the history.

Example -

Hartman reports George was b in Germany. In 1870 George himself reports he was b in Germany but in 1900 on and in both state and federal census, he reports b New York.

Going back to 1860 the family shows George and next sibling, Louisa, b Germany and the remaining children b Ohio. Younger sister Louisa lived until 1924 and in each census reports b Germany. She also reports immigration in 1855. That would appear to be correct by children's ages.

As Hartman has it correct despite the various NY reports made by George, I believe he had personal family knowledge.

I have come to the realization that I cannot (with online resources) document that Desdemonia Sprague belongs to this family though there is a distinct possibility.

I liked this tiny piece of history re Daniel -

Daniel A. Sprague established the manufacture of wagons many years ago and was succeeded by his sons Arnold and Charles, who occupy the cobble-stone building.

I believe Daniel A. of Herkimer is also the Daniel A. found in 1830 Oneida -

From Joyce M. Rahn, correspondent.
I have the James Monroe Sprague b 1819 married to a Caroline who was b. abt 1824 in NY.
An unverified family tradition says that Adoline Nye Sprague was a Daughter of the Pilgrim Fathers and that she had traced the Sprague line back to 1300's to a Normandy knight from Sprague Holland, the family had emigrated to England in the 1400's and to the US in the 1600's or 1700's.  Ancestry was supposed to be Dutch, French & Flemish.  The original of the pedigree was supposed to have burned in a house fire in Michigan.  William Henry Sprague speaking of his father Norman Sprague said Norman was so "scotch" he would send him out with only 2 or 3 shells and expect him to return with a rabbit or squirrel for each shell.  Luckily Wm was a good shot.  William Henry was supposed to be one of the younger children of Norman's 18 children.
On a misplaced census form I had found the elderly Eliphalet Sprague living with a young Monroe Sprague b. in MI abt 1829.  I have assumed they were father & son, but it is possible that he is a grandson.
