Marine Decorated. Sergeant Raymond J. Daggett, who rescuedwounded companions on Iwo Jima, is shown as he waspresented with the Bronze Star at the Philadelphia NavyYard.

A Briarcliff Manor Marine Sergeant, Raymond J. Daggett, whodefied an enemy artillery and mortar barrage to rescuewounded companions on Iwo Jima was recently awarded theBronze Star Medal....

Daggett, an infantry squad leader, was a member of anassault company which supported a tank attack near thecenter of the island. Nearing Iwo's volcanic ledges theMarine attackers were caught in a mortar barrage and theinfantrymen were forced to seek cover.

The intense barrage fell on the tanks disabling many ofthem. Wounded crewmen were caught in their batteredvehicles. A few crawled out of their tanks but were unableto move to a place of safety. Daggett went to aid them. Hecontinually moved into the danger area until he was struckin the left arm by a shell fragment....

From Joyce M. Rahn, correspondent. I have the James Monroe Sprague b 1819 married to aCaroline who was b. abt 1824 in NY. An unverified family tradition says that Adoline NyeSprague was a Daughter of the Pilgrim Fathers and that shehad traced the Sprague line back to 1300's to a Normandyknight from Sprague Holland, the family had emigrated toEngland in the 1400's and to the US in the 1600's or1700's. Ancestry was supposed to be Dutch, French &Flemish. The original of the pedigree was supposed to haveburned in a house fire in Michigan. William Henry Spraguespeaking of his father Norman Sprague said Norman was so"scotch" he would send him out with only 2 or 3 shells andexpect him to return with a rabbit or squirrel for eachshell. Luckily Wm was a good shot. William Henry wassupposed to be one of the younger children of Norman's 18children. On a misplaced census form I had found the elderlyEliphalet Sprague living with a young Monroe Sprague b. inMI abt 1829. I have assumed they were father & son, but itis possible that he is a grandson.
