248 | From Joyce M. Rahn, correspondent. I have the James Monroe Sprague b 1819 married to aCaroline who was b. abt 1824 in NY. An unverified family tradition says that Adoline NyeSprague was a Daughter of the Pilgrim Fathers and that shehad traced the Sprague line back to 1300's to a Normandyknight from Sprague Holland, the family had emigrated toEngland in the 1400's and to the US in the 1600's or1700's. Ancestry was supposed to be Dutch, French &Flemish. The original of the pedigree was supposed to haveburned in a house fire in Michigan. William Henry Spraguespeaking of his father Norman Sprague said Norman was so"scotch" he would send him out with only 2 or 3 shells andexpect him to return with a rabbit or squirrel for eachshell. Luckily Wm was a good shot. William Henry wassupposed to be one of the younger children of Norman's 18children. On a misplaced census form I had found the elderlyEliphalet Sprague living with a young Monroe Sprague b. inMI abt 1829. I have assumed they were father & son, but itis possible that he is a grandson. US Census 1870 Michigan, Lyon, Oakland pg 10 Dwelling #80,Family #80 enumerated 8th Jul 1870: Sprague, James 50 M Farmer NY , Caroline 46 F Keeping House NY , Hellen 18 F At Home MI , Nettie 16 F At School MI student , Sarah 14 F At School MI student , Charles 10 M At School MI student , Fannie 7 F At School MI student , Willie 4 M At School MI , Rhoda 88 F Live with son CT | Sprague, James Monroe (I129236)
