101 | "During the summer of 1861 when James was seventeen, hisolder brother Bowles, who had left home at the age oftwelve, convinced James to also leave home. Their fatherwas opposed to this, but James had made up his mind. Heand Bowles traveled about 150 miles west to Seneca Countyin the Finger Lakes region of New York state. They soughtwork as farm hands. In September of 1861, after theharvest, the brothers enlisted in the New York 75thInfantry and went off to fight at places like Pensacola,New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Port Hudson, Choctaw Bayou,Brashear City, Petersburg, Richmond, Deep Bottom, and inthe Shenandoah Valley at Berryville, Winchester, Strasburg,Fisher's Hill, and Cedar Creek. During the battle of PortHudson in May of 1863, James suffered a serious wound.During the Battle of Cedar Creek in October of 1864, theConfederates captured him. He survived the winter of 1864,the time of greatest deprivation and suffering among CivilWar prisoners, at Salisbury prison in North Carolina. Hisimprisonment left him nearly fatal illnesses from which hedid not recover for at least a year after his release fromthe army." | Sprague, James Henry (I95718)

Bradford's account says "Captain Standish hiswife dyed in the first sicknes; and he maried againe, andhath 4 sones liveing, and some are dead." Morton tells us"In his younger time he went over into the low countries, and was a soldier there, and came acquainted with thechurch at Leyden, and came over into New England, with suchof them as at the first set out for the planting of theplantation of New Plimouth, and bare a deep share of thefirst difficulties, and was always very faithful to theirinterests." In the beginning, Myles Standish was elected Captain of theColony's military force and continued in that positionuntil he died. Myles Standish is listed as Capt. Lora Standish, deceased; Mary Standish "my Daughter in law" deceased; wifeBarbara Standish; son Josias Standish "upon his marriage";sons Alexander, Myles, Josias and Charles Standish; MarcyeRobinson; servant John Irish Jr. The inventory of ElizabethHopkins dated 6 Oct. 1659 mentions "a smale matter in Mrs.Standishes hand."
