"During the summer of 1861 when James was seventeen, hisolder brother Bowles, who had left home at the age oftwelve, convinced James to also leave home.  Theirfather was opposed to this, but James had made up hismind.  He and Bowles traveled about 150 miles west toSeneca County in the Finger Lakes region of New Yorkstate.  They sought work as farm hands.  InSeptember of 1861, after the harvest, the brothers enlistedin the New York 75th Infantry and went off to fight atplaces like Pensacola, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, PortHudson, Choctaw Bayou, Brashear City, Petersburg, Richmond,Deep Bottom, and in the Shenandoah Valley at Berryville,Winchester, Strasburg, Fisher's Hill, and CedarCreek.  During the battle of Port Hudson in May of1863, James suffered a serious wound.  During theBattle of Cedar Creek in October of 1864, the Confederatescaptured him.  He survived the winter of 1864, thetime of greatest deprivation and suffering among Civil Warprisoners, at Salisbury prison in North Carolina. Hisimprisonment left him nearly fatal illnesses from which hedid not recover for at least a year after his release fromthe army."

"Mayflower Families in Progress" by Edie Thomas.
Captain Myles Standish and his wife Rose came on the"Mayflower". His second wife Barbara came over in 1623 onthe "Anne". Bradford's account says "Captain Standish hiswife dyed in the first sicknes; and he maried againe, andhath 4 sones liveing, and some are dead." Morton tells us"In his younger time he went over into the low countries, and was a soldier there, and came acquainted with thechurch at Leyden, and came over into New England, with suchof them as at the first set out for the planting of theplantation of New Plimouth, and bare a deep share of thefirst difficulties, and was always very faithful to theirinterests."
In the beginning, Myles Standish was elected Captain of theColony's military force and continued in that positionuntil he died. Myles Standish is listed as Capt. Standishin the 1643 list of Duxbury men 16-60 able to beararms.  This implies he was born after Aug.
1583.  His son Alexander is also in the same list. Thewill of Captaine Myles Standish Sr. of Duxburrow, dated 7March 1655/6, proved 4 May 1657, mentions dau. LoraStandish, deceased; Mary Standish "my Daughter in law"deceased; wife Barbara Standish; son Josias Standish "uponhis marriage"; sons Alexander, Myles, Josias and CharlesStandish; Marcye Robinson; servant John Irish Jr. Theinventory of Elizabeth Hopkins dated 6 Oct. 1659 mentions"a smale matter in Mrs. Standishes hand."  This is thelast know reference to Barbara.
